Returning to Pausa after their sold-out January debut, Brazil 716 promises another memorable night of authentic Brazilian instrumental music.

In this show, Brazil 716 will take the audience through the choro/samba/jazz that influenced and was in turn influenced by bossa nova, including tunes by Garoto, Esmeraldino Salles, Zé Menezes, Antônio Carlos “Tom” Jobim, Baden Powell, and a few samba songs and original choro compositions. Brazil 716 is Stephen Guerra and Rochester-based trio Rosa Boêmia

Stephen Guerra https://www.youtube.com/stephenguerra Specializing in Brazilian choro, guitarist-composer Stephen Guerra has performed at music clubs, arts institutions, universities, and guitar societies across the US and Brazil with Rogério Souza, Duo Violão, and Tiago do Bandolim among others. He’s spent years studying choro and samba in Rio de Janeiro with legendary brothers Rogério Souza Ronaldo do Bandolim (of Trio Madeira and Época de Ouro) and continues to visit regularly. Stephen’s published music includes Suíte Rio de Janeiro (Guitar Chamber Music Press) and 10 Brazilian Choros (Mel Bay) for classical guitar solo, the grant-funded album Choro in the Time of Bossa Nova with Duo Guerra/Morrow, and a popular YouTube channel. Stephen has a Ph.D. in music theory from Yale University and has published research on African-diasporic rhythm and meter in the Journal of Music Theory and the Brazilian Journal of Music and Mathematics. Stephen currently teaches music theory, counterpoint, and the choro chamber music ensemble at the University at Buffalo.

Rosa Boêmia Based in Rochester, NY, Rosa Boêmia (Ken Luk, bandolim; Bernardo Marcondes Rodrigues, guitar; Darien Lamen, pandeiro) specializes in performing Brazilian choro music. Originated in 19th century Rio de Janeiro, choro is a popular instrumental music genre that began around the same time as samba. Contrary to its meaning “cry” or “lament,” choro is mostly upbeat, joyous, and syncopated.
