Local guitarist Stephen Guerra and multi-instrumentalist Ken Luk from Buffalo’s favorite Brazilian group Brazil 716 share the stage with one of Brazil’s living legends, Rogério Souza on 7-string guitar. The trio will play standard and original choro, samba, bossa, and MPB in solos, duos, and trios, celebrating the recent release of Stephen’s new album No Balanço do Choro-Samba (all streaming platforms).

 Rogério Souza (7-string guitar) Born in Rio de Janeiro, 7-string guitarist, composer, and arranger Rogério Souza is one of the great representatives of the carioca language of the Brazilian guitar. He has been involved in the largest events related to MPB (Brazilian popular music), mainly in choro and samba. He’s worked with the greatest Brazilian musicians, including Baden Powell, Paulinho da Viola, Sivuca, Altamiro Carrilho, Paulo Moura, João Bosco, Ivan Lins, Zé Menezes, Guinga, Turíbio Santos, Rafael Rabello, Cristóvão Bastos, Proveta, Ronaldo do Bandolim, Zé da Velha, groups Nó em Pingo d’Água and Grupo Época de Ouro, among others. He’s played in festivals, cultural spaces, and music universities and schools in all corners of the world such as Japan, China, USA, holding concerts and workshops every year at several universities in the USA such as Oberlin, Berklee College of Music, Yale University, University of Virginia, James Madison University, Georgetown University, Columbia University, Temple University, University of Chicago, Notre Dame University, San Francisco University, University of California Los Angeles, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, among others. He is currently dedicated to his solo work, giving presentations and workshops on the dissemination of MPB and his latest works on CDs/Books.  Ken Luk (bandolim, pedal steel, tenor guitar) Born and raised in Hong Kong, Ken Luk frequently appears as a soloist and with the Janus Guitar Duo and Trio Ghidorah. He performs with Rosa Boêmia, Forró Estrelas do Norte, Mosaic Foundation, the Eastman Gamelan Ensemble, and the Rochester Mandolin Orchestra. Performance highlights include Experiencing Villa-Lobos Festival, Live from Hochstein, Rochester Fringe Festival, The Great Blue Heron Festival, and Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance, among others. Co-founder of Rochester Classical Guitar and the Rochester Mandolin Orchestra, Ken is also an avid arranger, and was a finalist in the 2017 Roland Dyens Arranging International Competition. He also serves on the board of the Classical Mandolin Society of America.  

Stephen Guerra (6-string guitar) In 2009, Stephen left his career in finance to study music full-time. Today, Stephen performs and teaches choro around the US and Brazil, appearing regularly with Rio de Janeiro legend Rogério Souza as well as Rochester-based choro group Rosa Boêmia. Some recent appearances include Yale University Luce Hall, Georgetown University Friday Music Series, University at Buffalo Concert Series, Friends of Vienna at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Pausa Art House, Jazz Forum Arts, Boulder Guitar Society, and more. His work has been supported by numerous competitive artist grants and composer residencies. He’s published sheet music with Mel Bay and Guitar Chamber Music Press and two full-length albums. He teaches music theory and the choro ensemble at the University at Buffalo and lives between NY and Rio de Janeiro.
