Hilario Duran's CD “Contumbao” delivers a fascinating array of Afro- Cuban Jazz from its roots; Hilario’s fiery piano playing, a powerful percussion section and an impeccable bass performance create a sound that is uniquely Cuban and totally authentic…

 

Duran returns to the recording arena with Contumbao is both welcome and richly satisfying. In a quartet format will perform Afro-Cuban Jazz repertoire: Bembé 6X8, Güajira, Pilon, Son Montuno and Rumba enriched with the Tumbao, which means a typical Cuban ostinato melody used to comp most of the styles of Afro-Cuban music. Hilario Duran is making a triumphant musical homecoming on his new album; he is coming back to his roots to take us on a trip of this unique atmosphere that belongs to Cuban music. “Contumbao” is a fresh take of Hilario’s original compositions.

 

HILARIO DURAN: Piano: One of the premier exponents of Latin Jazz, and winner of the Louis Applebaum Composer's Award; the Cuban born, Hilario Duran grew up in Havana into a musical family. He began working as a professional musician in Cuba’s Los Papa Cun-Cun Ensemble. In the ’70s; Duran was Chucho Valdés’ chosen successor in Cuba's most modern big band, ‘Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna’. Later on, as part of the Arturo Sandoval band, Hilario toured worldwide and had the opportunity of performing with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Michel Legrand, among many others. Hilario’s formal music training, combined with a deep understanding of traditional Cuban music, as well as a love for jazz, allowed him to play a key role in the integration of Afro-Cuban music and jazz; he is a virtuoso player, arranger, composer, and bandleader in his own right. After making his mark in Cuba Duran continued to essay his skills as pianist, composer, arranger and musical director of remarkable virtuosity. Since arriving in Canada, Hilario has established himself in his own name; he is a multi-Canadian Juno Award winner and nominee; an American Grammy nominee; and recipient of the 2007 Chico O’Farrill Lifetime Achievement Award from Latin Jazz USA for his outstanding contributions to Afro Cuban Jazz and Latin Jazz. Hilario Duran immigrated to Canada in 1998 and named ‘One of the 10 Most Influential Hispanic Canadians’ in 2009.

 

AMHED MITCHEL: Drums Amhed Mitchel started playing drums at a very young age; graduated from the National School of Music in Cuba, Amhed had the opportunity of work, in his early 20's, with the great Chucho Valdes, the Cuban pianist legend and multi-Grammy Award winner. As a session drummer, he has travelled extensively around the world and performed with musical icons as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, Dianne Reeves and Leonel Lueke at the closing concert of the Tokyo Jazz Festival in 2004 at the time they chose a group of musicians to perform in an All-Stars Jazz band. Since his arrival in Canada in 2006, Mitchel has been performing with the likes of Jane Bunnett and Hilario Duran among many others.

 

JORGE LUIS TORRES ‘PAPIOSCO’: Percussion Jorge Lui's musical career dates back from more than 20 years, first, when he was only 12, named a child prodigy and picked from a group of children to perform with the great Tatagüines. After graduated from the school of music, Jorge Luis started to work as a session musician performing with the cream of the cream in Cuba performing internationally and sharing scenarios with greats musicians; one of the bands where Jorge Luis has imprinted his mark was Cubanismos (2002-2006), celebrating the legacy of Cuban music; during this period, he also had the opportunity of work in the Grammynominated CD “Greeting from Havana”. Since his move to Canada, percussionist Jorge Luis Torres has been performing/touring and recording with most of the well-known musicians in Canada’s music field and now he has become one of the busiest percussionists in the city.

 

ROBERTO RIVERON: Bass The style that defines Roberto Riverón comes from the experience of Cuban music he has been taken since he was a child. Having established himself as a bassist, Riverón appeared with some of the finest artists of the1990s in the island of Cuba. He is graduated as a guitar and bass player from the National School of Arts (ENA) in Havana. Roberto Riverón contributed to the recording of the Latin Grammy winner album “La Rumba Soy Yo” (Haila Mompie) and the Grammy-nominated “La Formula” (Isaac Delgado). Following a successful career in his native country as a leading studio and bassist, Roberto decided to move to Canada to continue his endeavour as a musician working and collaborating with as many musical projects as possible in the city to share his vast experience with Canadian musicians.
