The outcome is an extraordinary program “with a planar modulating language and a propulsive drift. The music is part chamber jazz, part big-boned rock percussion, part free improvisation.” Giovanni Russonello- The New York Times

Mareike Wiening’s background, both musical and personal is made up of the cultures of Germany, Norway, Denmark and the US. Her original compositions are influenced by diversity and she is recognized for her virtuously elegant way of playing the drums. With Rich Perry on tenor saxophone, Glenn Zaleski on piano, Alex Goodman on guitar and Johannes Felscher on bass, Wiening leads a band of extraordinary musicians. Metropolis Paradise is dedicated to Wiening’s six year residence in New York. The music tells the daily battle of surviving as a female jazz musician, while commuting back and forth between Europe and the US. Recorded in June 2018, the session was surrounded by great emotions because Metropolis Paradise happens to be the very last album recorded at legendary Systems Two Studios in Brooklyn. Though the name still exists, the original building closed its doors when founders Nancy and Mike Marciano retired the day after this recording. Wiening’s compositions are emotional, rhythmical and most importantly, always lyrical. It is obvious that a drummer is acting both as a leader and a composer. The musical dialogue between soloist and accompanist is creates a constant giving and taking and unexpected musical surprises arise through spontaneity. Wiening studied Jazz Performance in Mannheim (Germany), Copenhagen (Denmark) and, after receiving a two-year full scholarship from the German government, graduated from New York University in 2014. Her music has been performed at important venues like the Carnegie Hall, Blue Note NYC as well as in concert halls in Germany, Switzerland, France, The Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Lithuania, Canada, US, Brazil and Slovenia. She has been playing at festivals like the Enjoy Jazz Festival, Winter Jazz Fest New York, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Burlington Jazzfest, Women in Jazz Festival, to name a few. She is endorsed by MEINL Cymbals exclusively.
